I’ve never really been a fan of ‘self help’ books. I’ve had a few in my time, but I always tend to skim through them and they usually end up catching dust on my bookshelf, never to be picked up again.
I’m always sceptical when I am introduced to books in this genre, but I can hands down say that these three books genuinely changed and influenced my life enough for me to want to write about them.
I really believe that we should all help each other. Everyday, we are reminded by the news, that the world can be a cruel place. But somewhere out there in this cruel world, are individuals that took pen to paper to help us through our life difficulties, to help us deal with changes and to help us know that we are all able enough to pursue everyone of our dreams.
Whether you’re feeling a bit lost in life, whether you’re frightened of change or whether you are desperate to pursue your dreams but don’t know where to start, then these books are for you.
3 Books That Will Change Your Life:
We’ve all had those ‘aha’ moments, when things just click into place. Whether it’s hearing a new perspective, trying something out and realising it wasn’t that difficult after all, or the sudden realisation that you’re on the life path you wanted to be on.
All three of these books have had an impact on my life in a different way. The first book taught me so many life lessons and every time I re-read it – yes you’ll want to – I learn something more. The second is an incredible book if you’re experiencing change, especially if you don’t like it. The third will help you to make all of your dreams come true and more, if you use it correctly.
1. The Alchemist
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, was actually a very random title that I picked off the shelf in a bookstore. I was waiting while my mum browsed some books for her own work and spied the beautiful cover. It happened into my life at the most perfect of times and will forever be my favourite inspiring book of all time.
After reading it, I was so surprised to see online, that it has been endorsed by so many celebrities. Famous actresses and actors, such as Julia Roberts and Will Smith, plus many many more, have claimed that they owe so much to this book.
The Alchemist is an enchanting story that teaches you an overwhelming amount of life lessons in a very subtle way. But the main journey has the same context: to show you how we all go about pursuing our dreams.
What do you dream of? What life do you want to live? The Alchemist follows the ups and downs of a shepherd boy who is off in search of worldly treasure. At every turn he is met by blocks, set in place by general life circumstances and mind frame. Along the way you are also introduced to characters, some who will never ever reach their dreams due to the acceptance of the life they already have.
Each and every one of us, just like the shepherd boy, are searching for our treasure. The Alchemist shows you all the different routes people take, out of habit, out of fear and out of love. It opens your eyes to the things that are stopping you from possessing your own dreams and goals. It also shows us how we can follow and achieve our dreams via the most magical story.
Don’t live your life going through the paces. If you seriously want to achieve your dreams, then you need to read this book.
2. Who Moved My Cheese
Every time I’m feeling a bit lost in life I go back and re-read Who Moved My Cheese. Who Moved My Cheese by Dr. Spencer Johnson is a timeless classic that will only probably take you an hour to read. Despite being short, it will leave a lasting imprint on your life.
My mum sent me this book, when I was going through a break up as a teenager. I have since re-read it when going through career changes, when I unexpectedly found out about my daughter and whenever major changes come my way.
The story in this book can be used to deal with changes in both your professional life and your personal life.
Do you fear change? I know I always do! The story follows two mice and two humans, all who deal with change in very different ways. See which character you are when faced with change. Are you Hem who loves being comfortable and refuses change? Are you Haw who is scared of change but will adapt if necessary? Or are you one of the mice?
Who Moved My Cheese will teach you how to accept change, how to anticipate it and how to let it have a positive effect on every aspect of your life.
3. The Secret
Have you ever heard of the law of the attraction? The law of attraction says that we can have anything we want to in life, we just have to will it. And, it’s actually a lot easier to do than you think.
In this book, you’ll learn how to use ‘The Secret’ to attract money, good health, prospering relationships, happiness and general success. It teaches you to understand how your mind works, in a very simple way. Plus, how you can achieve the deemed impossible.
I’ve practised using this book on my own life over the last few years. Every little thing I have truly, whole heartedly wanted and worked towards has happened. From being able to quit my job, to being financially stable, to being able to travel for a long time with my toddler, to achieving my dream of being a freelancer.
I owe a lot to this book. It’s easy to read and set out so that you can either read it all, or flip to the pages that suit you best. Either way, this book inspires you to change your way of thinking, into a way that will make your life flourish to no end.
