Oh gosh, I was so clueless when I was pregnant with Evie. She was my first baby and I didn’t even get any pre-natal vitamins until my midwife asked me if I was taking them. Folic what now?
I also didn’t have any pregnancy must-haves on my radar and pretty much winged it the whole way through, taking recommendations of things to get from friends and family, as and when they suggested them.
This time around though I’m far more organised. As soon as I found out I was pregnant, out came my shopping list. I realised a little late last time, that there are a few ‘essentials’ that not only help your body to get through pregnancy in the best way possible, but they actually help you to enjoy it too. I’ve listed a few of my favourite pregnancy must-haves below.
7 Pregnancy Must-Haves
I read this on someones status the other day;
‘Getting ready for labour is a bit like getting ready for a marathon; both take months of preparation.’
And that’s so true…we really do need to prepare our bodies for birth. Everything I’ve listed below will help you to prep in some way. Whether it’s keeping you snuggly, keeping you healthy or keeping you strong, here are 7 pregnancy must-haves I recommend to every expecting Mama!
Have you heard of Elvie before? If you haven’t then you need to check it out. It is amazing and it is first on the list for so many reasons. The main one? Elvie is a pelvic floor trainer and will help to strengthen your pelvic floor not just for labour, but for after too. I fully regret not doing pelvic floor exercises before and after I had my daughter. I ‘let myself go’ so much that I couldn’t even bounce on a trampoline anymore. I’ve had this device for nearly a year now and it has been incredible. It’s such a clever little device. It connects to an app on your phone and through the app you can play games that help to strengthen your pelvic floor. It definitely makes you a lot more conscious about this area and encourages you to ‘work out’. I’ve written more about the Elvie and why I love it so much in this post ‘How’s Your Pelvic Floor Post Baby? Have you heard of Elvie?‘.

Pre-natal vitamins are especially important in the first trimester. One thing I found though, in both pregnancies, is that certain pre-natal vitamins can actually make you really nauseous. A few of my friends found the same thing too. I didn’t realise until I forgot to take them for a few days, just how much they were contributing to my ‘morning sickness’. If you’re finding this, it’s worth trying a few certain brands out. For me, I realised omega-3 was the culprit causing my tummy to go bleugh!

3. Maternity Pillow
The first thing I went out and bought in this second pregnancy is a pregnancy pillow. If you haven’t got one yet, you NEED one. Honestly, you will thank me tomorrow morning when you’ve had the snuggliest, comfiest sleep since you found out you were pregnant. When I was pregnant with Evie, I didn’t get one till about 28 weeks. I so wish I’d picked it up much sooner. They mould to your body and help you to get comfy straight away. I’ll pre-warn you though, your partner will be jealous and will want one too!

4. Maternity Jeans
I cannot tell you how comfy maternity jeans are! I somehow managed to survive my last pregnancy without buying any maternity jeans at all. My bump was so teeny! I grew out of my jeans at 36 weeks pregnant and the last few weeks just winged it in dresses. This time around though and I’m already out of my skinny jeans at 19 weeks. I’ve shopped around for maternity jeans that don’t look gross and shapeless and amazingly found out that my favourite everyday ‘Topshop Joni’ Jeans’ also come in a maternity version. I snapped some up last week and they are so comfy!

5. Good Fitting Bras
I used to be a bra fit specialist so I could harp on all day about why its so important to have a good fitting bra. The only problem is, in pregnancy you don’t know what size you’re going to end up at and your boobs change so much throughout the whole nine months! If you don’t want to be spending out on bras every couple of months, I recommend getting some ‘bra extenders’. These are amazing and just about tide you through!

6. Massage roller or Tennis Ball
Are your looking for something to help with your achy and tense muscles? You have to be so careful though, not to damage tissue during pregnancy. Deep tissue massages might be out of the question for a while, but I highly recommend getting a tennis ball or a ‘palm shaped’ massage roller and just rolling it down your back and across your shoulders occasionally. It feels so amazing and is the safest way to have a massage at home during pregnancy.

7. Stretch Mark Cream
I managed to avoid getting stretch marks during pregnancy number one. I’m really hoping the same happens during pregnancy number two. Even though I don’t have stretch marks yet, I did use stretch mark cream during my first pregnancy and lately I’ve been using this super stretchy miracle oil from ‘Love Boo’. It smells amazing and honestly, it’s so lovely to massage into your achy body at the end of a busy day.
