Are you going to the great estate in Cornwall, the most rambunctious garden fete?
We are so, so, so excited to be going to the Great Estate this year. I actually really wanted to go last year, when the festival first launched, but we happened to be away. I heard so many amazing things about it being the most unique, fun, weird, wonderful and incredible event and a ‘must add’ to any Cornish or Festival calendar.
I’m so chuffed that we get to be there this year and it actually looks ten times better than last years event. How that is even possible I don’t know!
If you’ve not heard of The Great Estate before, prepare to be dazzled! Whether you live in Cornwall or you’d love any excuse to travel down to the county, The Great Estate truly is a must add to your calendar.
Here’s a few things you can expect to see; live music, burlesque, jousting, the worlds biggest cream tea party, craft workshops, fairground rides, silent discos, yoga, hot tubs, secret gin parties…
Has that got you a little bit curious?
A Brief Intro To The Great Estate…The Greatest Festival In Cornwall?
I’m going to explain a lot more about the Festival and it’s unique twist in a moment, but first I’m going to drop a trailer video that will give you a really exciting highlight reel…
You can buy day tickets for either Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Or you can buy full weekend tickets and you can most definitely camp as well if you want to!
What Fun Things Are Happening At The Great Estate?
The Great Estate is a festival like no other. Expect to find the most unique happenings across the entire weekend.
Madam Wongs House Of Wrong – This tent is a world full of weird and wonderful entertainment. Expect to see the burlesque delights of Tallulah Blue, sword swallowing, contortionism, comedy hours, world music and entertainment. If that’s not enough, during the day you can take a visit to Captain Inkus Tattoo Parlour or the Iron Head’s Traditional Barbers for a little makeover.
The Duchy Vintage Fair – If you love shopping, the vintage fair tent is for you. Packed to the rim with vintage fashion, classic vinyl and tunes. Also expect to find retro home and campware, festival hair and make-up and a vintage tea and cake room.
The Sanctuary – Put your hands up if you’d much prefer to chill at a festival? If this is you then you’ll love ‘The Sanctuary’. A glade of calm, relaxation and tranquillity that’s nestled in the grounds of the stunning Scorrier House. Here you will find daily yoga classes (for all levels), storytelling, nature classes and workshops, meditation, hot tubs and more.
The Secret Gin Garden & Classical Corner – Just the name ‘The Secret Gin Garden’ makes me really excited. To get to it you need to follow ancient pathways to find a peaceful, tree-covered garden where you can sit and listen to classical music and sip Tarquin’s all day and all night.
The Whispering Woods – If arts, storytelling and workshops are more your thing, you’ll want to pay a visit to the ‘Whispering Woods’. Step into the mystical whispering woods where you’ll find stories and fables echoing through the trees. You’ll can take part in writing workshops, listen to talks and watch performances.
The Woodland Silent Disco – Have you ever been to a silent disco? I have and they are a lot of fun. Take a midnight walk through the enchanted gardens of Scorrier House to the place where you can dance right into the night.
But is there anything to do for kids?
Oh my goodness, there is a crazy amount of fun, unique and interesting things for kids to get up to over the whole weekend. We haven’t even got the full undisclosed list, but here are some of the highlights!
- Fairground rides
- Bouncy Castles
- Craft Workshops
- Skate Ramps
- Face Painting
- Hula Hoops
- Kids Silent Disco
- Drama Workshops
- Den Building Sessions
- Safari Workshop
- Foraging Workshops
…plus much much more!
We can’t wait to do den building with Evie, we’ll definitely be trying out a drama workshop, attending the silent disco and getting our faces painted!
But What About The Music?
My favourite thing about this festival is that they feature a lot of unique artists as well as emerging Cornish talent and the Cornish talent pool is HUGE! This year there will be two stages, as well as a dance tent.
Stage On The Green – The outdoor stage is new for this year and will take pride of place in the grounds of Scorrier House. Headliners include ‘The Charlatans’, the ‘Craig Charles Funk and Soul Show’ and the ‘Symphonica Orchestra featuring Mr. Switch’.
BBC Introducing Stage – Expect the latest and greatest up and coming talent from Cornwall and beyond including the likes of Accidental Hero, Samuel Howard, Lucy Anna, Suzie Mac, Bailey Tomkinson and Rosalie James.
Oh and that’s not it, there is even more to discover…
Although The Great Estate is already completely bursting at the seams with entertainment, live music and a whole array of uniquely weirdly wonderful things to do, there’s always room for a little bit extra.
Some of these offerings need to be booked in addition to your festival ticket, book them quick before they sell out!
The Knights Of Arkley – How do you fancy watching a bit of old Medieval Jousting? The Great Estate will host The Knights of Arkley on Saturday afternoon in front of Scorrier House. The knights and their horses will be dressed in glittering costumes. They’ll then show off their speed and daring as they ride towards each other with lance and shield. Expect to see other challenges and a series of races, games and horsemanship skills.
Worlds Biggest Cream Tea Party – Who doesn’t love a good cream tea in Cornwall? It wouldn’t be a rambunctious garden fête without a tea party and The Great Estate are taking this one step further as they attempt to host the world’s biggest cream tea party! This record breaking attempt will take place on Sunday 3rd June 2018. Bringing scones, jam, cream and tea to the lawns of Scorrier House, they’re looking for 735 proper Cornish cream tea guests. Will you be one of them?
Kernow Springs Woodland Hot Tubs – Guess where you’ll find me during the weekend? I’ll be soaking myself in wood-fired hot tubs, relaxing in a sauna yurt and chilling in a cosy Bedouin chill out lounge that’s complete with huge bean bags, rugs and throws. The Kernow Springs is the place for some light pampering over the weekend.
The Octopus Lounge – Fancy a little luxury on top of your weekend of rambunctious fun? Does anybody fancy some bubbly and oysters? Sponsored by the prestigious Laurent Perrier, the Octopus Lounge is where you can go for cocktails, champagne, exclusive seafood dining options, secret performances, comfy seating and luxury loos.
Wild Wine Club – If you are a lover of wine and food, don’t worry, there is also something for you. How do you fancy a beautiful three course dinner paired with delicious wines. Not only that but it will be served on a long candle lit table in a secret location within the grounds of Scorrier House. If this sounds like your thing, grab your tickets to the exclusive ‘Wild Wine Club’ before they sell out.
I think I just about got everything, but knowing ‘The Great Estate’ there will be a lot more ‘wild and wondeful’ happenings across the weekend that you have to see to believe. So the only question now is…
