FAMILY TRAVEL BUCKET LIST 2018

Travelling has always been my passion. Even before my daughter Evie was born, all of my spare money would go on travel and I couldn’t wait to pack my bags and head off to the airport. I love that excited feeling you get in the pit of your stomach as your plane takes off from the runway and you’re officially jet setting off to explore somewhere new. Regular readers of Life Unexpected will know that my family now shares that same passion for travel. For me, travelling with my family is way more magical than travel ever was when I was on my own.

Family Travel Bucket List 2018

This week, we’ve been busy working out our family travel bucket list for 2018. I’m already very excited about some of the places we are planning to to visit. If you’re looking for holiday inspiration keep reading, as we’ll be sharing our family travel bucket list with you below.

If you haven’t been on holiday with your kids before, I cannot recommend it enough. Kids adapt so quickly to their surroundings and family holidays really do strengthen your bond and bring you so much closer together.

I love watching how immersed Evie gets in different cultures. She isn’t one to shy away from trying new foods, from taking part in new activities or from trying to communicate with people, despite the language barriers.

Over the last two years we have made some of the most magical memories abroad. We have eaten tapas in Barcelona, explored historic monuments in Rome, travelled on a mountain train in Palma, swam with penguins in South Africa, and most magical of all, my fiancee proposed to me on a gondola in Venice.

Making Moments With Mark Warner

For me, family holidays are all about those special moments. The ones that you can look back on, both in photos and in your memories. It is those moments that have inspired me to apply to become a Mark Warner Brand Ambassador this year.

Mark Warner are a holiday company that are after my own heart. They are on a mission to help your family to create the most wonderful moments on holiday. They have hand picked beautiful resorts in the most stunning destinations and have fully equipped them with everything you could need for the perfect family holiday.

Family Travel Bucket List 2018

Family Travel Bucket List 2018

I love how much they focus on making sure that each person in your family makes the best memories, regardless of their age. They give you the chance for couple time or time on your own, they have kids clubs that will entertain even the very youngest and activities that will make your teenagers put down their phones.

In order to apply to be a Mark Warner Brand Ambassador, they have asked us to write a post on the one place we want to travel to this year. But, being such huge advocates of family travel I wanted to share with you our complete bucket list and the 5 places we are planning to visit in 2018.

Family Travel Bucket List For 2018

1. Foodie Holiday To Barcelona –

The first place on our family travel bucket list for 2018 is Barcelona. If you’re looking for a family holiday with beaches, foods, shopping and plenty of activities, I cannot recommend Barcelona enough. I went to Barcelona just over a year ago, but my fiancee has never been. We are both huge foodies and I really want to challenge him to a paella eating contest.

We are booking three days in April for his birthday and I want to take him on a tour of all my favourite Tapas restaurants. Barcelona is such a friendly and vibrant city. I don’t know who loved it more last time, me or my toddler. We’re going to do similar things to what we did before. We’re going to hire bikes and ride the promenade, have a beach day (weather permitting), visit the food markets, picnic in the local parks, explore more of Gaudi’s stunning architecture and eat our weight in tapas.

2. Skiing In The Alps –

The second place on our family travel bucket list for 2018 is ‘The Alps’. Ever since I was a little girl I’ve wanted to go skiing. Living in one of the warmest parts of the UK means we never, ever get to see snow. In fact, last week was the first time so much of a flurry hit Cornwall in about seven years. Last week we had thick snow and it was so powdery.

Family Travel Bucket List 2018

Evie loved playing in it and wanted to spend her whole day outdoors. She turns 4 next week and she is showing such an interest in sports of all kinds. Seeing how she played in the snow, showed me that she is getting to that perfect age for a ski holiday. We’ve been looking longingly at some of the Mark Warner ‘ski’ hotels and two of our favourites are in Tignes and Val-D’Isère. I have to admit, I am super nervous about the idea of a snow holiday. Purely because it’s something I’ve never tried. I know I’ll feel so much more comfortable going with an experienced company like Mark Warner and I love that they have baby slopes and that they offer lessons, even for complete beginners like us.

3. Island Hopping A The Isles of Scilly –

Isn’t it odd that one of our favourite places to holiday is actually in Cornwall, where we live? If you’ve never been to Cornwall before, you need to go. It is amazing for families, whatever the time of year and whatever the age of your children. We live in St. Ives so are really lucky to have the beach on our doorstep. But the whole county is so gorgeous and so vast, that booking a holiday here still feels to us like we’re exploring somewhere new.

In the last two years we’ve stayed in a cottage in Boscastle, a grand family house in St. Mawes, on a farm in Port Isaac and at a family spa destination in Bedruthan.

The Isles of Scilly is next on our list. It’s so close to my house, yet I’ve never been! It’s only a short boat ride away from Penzance in Cornwall and with landscapes that would be mistaken for the Caribbean, it’s one we’ll definitely be visiting when the weather gets a little warmer. We’re planning on hiring an AirBnb on one of the Islands, and spending two or three days exploring the local towns and villages. If you want to come to Cornwall, be sure to check out my Cornish pages on Life Unexpected and feel free to inbox me any questions! I’m always happy to share recommendations.

4. Beach Holiday In Greece –

The fourth place on our family travel bucket list for 2018 is Greece. One thing my fiancee has been begging for, is a relaxing beach holiday. We’ve been eyeing up a couple of the Mark Warner resorts in Greece, particularly Rhodes and Kos. Greece is a destination that has been at the top of our family bucket list since forever. We are actually hoping to get married in Santorini in a few years time. One of the main reasons we haven’t done a beach holiday yet, is that I am not really one for relaxing and lounging around.

Family Travel Bucket List 2018

Family Travel Bucket List 2018

I much prefer activity filled holidays, so I love that resorts like Mark Warner offer you a compromise. Not only do you have the beachside location (with beach loungers set up and ready for you to use), but they also offer a whole range of activities that suit each member of your family. Choosing a Mark Warner holiday means I get to go mountain biking and kayaking with Evie, while Aitan sits on the beach and relaxes.

Mark Warner have actually just opened a new resort in Turkey. Even though Greece is somewhere we are desperate to visit, I am now completely thrown. The resort in Turkey sits just below beautiful hills and it has the most stunning beach side pool and restaurant that serves up fresh seafood. You can go and take peek here!

5. Cultural Holiday To Croatia –

The last place on our family travel bucket list for 2018 is Croatia. Have you ever seen pictures of Croatia? It looks so beautiful. We were supposed to go when we went travelling last year, but we just couldn’t find flights to tie in with the rest of our travels. This year we want to hire a car or van and spend 10 days exploring different parts of Croatia. Especially the National Parks, the Plitvice Lakes and the cities of Dubrovnik and Split. Exploring historic buildings and architectural gems are some of our favourite things to do and it is my dream to swim in some of Croatia’s lakes and to sit and eat food in their famous city squares.

As per usual, we will be sharing all our family holidays with you on Life Unexpected. This time I’m extra excited as we’ll also be bringing you videos to accompany our pictures. We have just invested in a really great vlogging camera and I can’t wait to capture even more of our special moments, this time on film. Keep your eyes peeled for our first post on our trip to Barcelona in April.

Family Travel Bucket List 2018

Meanwhile, we hope that Mark Warner gives us the incredible opportunity to be their brand ambassador this year. We want to bring you updates of how fantastic their family holidays are and and all the reasons that you should book one for yourselves!

Barcelona is amazing. You should definitely visit at somepoint. Even for a couple of days. I have to admit, this latest cold spat has really made me crave a sunny, warm holiday!

We’re not able to travel this year due to house purchasing so I’ve done a 2018 bucket list of things to do in the UK (Mainly Cornwall). This looks lovely though, It’s great to start creating memories with Evie! She’ll have some wonderful things to look back on when she’s older! And some fab experiences.
Lovely post and good luck getting through your list this year 🙂
    Lots of love xx

I love your family travel bucket list! Greece is at the very top of my bucket list too. A resort holiday would be so perfect for my family! I would give anything to swap this cold UK weather for a warm beach right now. x

    • March 13, 2018 / 8:15 pm

Thank you so much. Greece looks so beautiful! I love the look of the Mark Warner resorts too and how much they cater for everyone in your family. The locations look so perfect and they sound very family friendly. I would also give anything to swap this weather for a warm beach right now. 🙂 Although I’d definitely be soaking up the warmth on a paddleboard or a sailing boat instead of a sun lounger.

Oh wow, your travel photos are absolutely gorgeous! Definitely worthy of a Mark Warner Ambassadorship 🙂 Just like you, I travelled extensively before children, from Fiji to Rwanda to Iceland to Thailand to the Rocky Mountains. I love travelling. It gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling as I’m planning the trip, and learning about a new culture is so humbling. Since I have 4 children, the scope of our travels has had to be reduced to the UK and France, but it’s still lovely to take the children to places I know and love. I love the fact you guys have still been travelling loads since having Evie. Travelling rocks! I’m crossing it all for you re. the ambassadorship! xx Mel

We are off to Barcelona too this summer….we have a villa about 50 minutes away for 2 weeks, which will allow us to go into the city a day at a time to give the children time to play in the pool in between…taking it very slow, no rush

An amazing bucket list and some absolutely beautiful places to visit. I think it’s great when families take their kids travelling, such an enriching experience for them that will stick with them throughout life.

    • March 13, 2018 / 8:02 pm

It really is an enriching experience. I think family travel brings you so much closer together. I have to admit, I was so scared about taking my daughter away for the first time and I know lots of families are also very apprehensive about holidays and travel, but it was a lot easier than I ever thought it would be and I couldn’t get over how much my daughters has learnt from travelling. 🙂

  23. March 12, 2018 / 11:44 am

This is such a fantastic bucket list and way to build onto your fabulous travels you have already taken. I really hope to take my kids to my home town of Cape Town soon

    Laura x

    • March 13, 2018 / 7:55 pm

Laura you will adore Cape Town. There is so much to do there for kids there, but grown ups too. I can honestly say, I’ve never been somewhere so beautiful in my life. The views are breathtaking and the whole vastness of the place makes you feel so small, but so honoured to get to see it. Even a basic drive to the shops is beautiful. I can’t wait to get to go back again. Next time we really want to go on Safari and I never got to hike Table Mountain which I’m so sad about.

  24. March 12, 2018 / 2:07 pm

I would love to visit all of these places!! This year we will be sticking with travel in the United States. Our bucket list so far includes a trip to Utah, New York State and Ocean City, MD!

    • March 13, 2018 / 7:54 pm

I absolutely love New York. If you haven’t been before it’s such an incredible city. There is definitely a really special vibe there. I went before I had my daughter, but I’d love to go back with her. We hope to come stateside next year! I’m planning a Disney trip for my 30th birthday and then we’re hoping to road trip a little bit through America. If you have any recommendations, I’d love to hear any.

  25. March 12, 2018 / 5:48 pm

We took a dream holiday to Lapland at the end of last year and the kids fell in love with being in the snow so I would love to teach them how to ski / snowboard

    • March 13, 2018 / 7:52 pm

I would LOVE to go to Lapland. It looks so magical. We’re hoping to take Evie when she gets a bit older. I bet your kids loved building snowmen and having snowball fights. I think teaching kids to ski would be such an amazing opportunity. I hope we both get our family snowy ski holidays this year! 🙂

  26. March 12, 2018 / 6:44 pm

My husband and I went to Barcelona and Bruges for our honeymoon. I’d love to go back with our three-year-old daughter. Currently saving for Australia and New Zealand. Off to read your penguin adventure.

    • March 13, 2018 / 7:49 pm

Ohhh New Zealand is on our list too. We’d love to go for 6 months. I bet Bruges is lovely! Your 3 year old will LOVE Barcelona. My daughter was 2 when we went and she loved dancing to all the music that was playing on the streets everywhere. I also loved that there was so much to do for kids! All the parks and big open spaces are so perfect for families and the city is so vibrant and friendly.

  27. April 23, 2018 / 7:47 pm

Wow what a wonderful list of places you have explored with your family. We are going on our first family holiday abroad this year and can not wait. My little girl is an Evie too!
