Are you a busy parent who is looking for some healthy summer kids snacks that you can just grab and go? Then you’ve come to the right place!
Earlier this year we teamed up with Organix and became one of their #NoJunkJourney ambassadors. We shared with you a post asking you if you knew what was really in the baby and toddler snacks that you find at the supermarket. The results were shocking! You can read more about that here: Do You Know What’s Really In Baby And Toddler Snacks?
Today we’re back again, but this time we’re sharing with you some ‘healthy summer kids snacks’ that you can take with you on the go, during your summer holiday adventures. We’ll also be sharing an exclusive peek into some of the new ‘Organix Goodies’ snacks that have just hit the shelves.
Snacking Between Meals
Did you know that toddler tummies are still really tiny? That’s why quite often you might hear cries of ‘I’m hungry’ not long after they’ve had a meal. I can vouch for the fact this is my toddler! That’s why toddlers actually need to snack in between meals, in order to top up their energy and nutrient levels. They can’t get all they need from just three meals a day.
It’s especially important to snack in the summer months, when kids are even more active and burning lots of energy outside on adventures.
When it comes to food for Evie, I’m all for finding a good balance at snack time. Living in Cornwall and being so close to the beach, you can imagine that we eat our fair share of ice-cream in summer. But, aside from the occasional treat, we do try our best to keep snack time and snacking between meals as healthy as possible.
This isn’t always easy. Especially when you’re a super busy parent and especially if your summer days are spent at local attractions, on road trips, or at the beach. Why are these places always full of sugar-laden unhealthy snack options?
Eating On The Go – Making Healthy Snack Choices
Like most families, in the summer holidays our days are very outdoor centred. One day you’ll find us bike riding, the next we’ll be having a picnic on the beach and the next we’ll be exploring a beautiful garden or a fun themed family attraction somewhere.
One thing’s for sure, we’re never home for long. That’s why, no matter where we go, my handbag is always packed full of healthy snacks. Partly so I can avoid having to buy the ‘rubbish’ snacks that you usually find at popular ‘kids places’ to go, but mostly to ward of those cries of ‘I’m hungry’ and to prevent (or tame) those tantrums that always come when Evie’s tummy starts to rumble.
This usually happens as soon as we step outside the front door! Who else can relate to this?
Some of the healthy snacks I love to take with us include; fruit, little pots of vegetables with a dip such as hummus and also Organix snacks.
The reason we love Organix so much is that they carry the ‘no junk’ promise. They’re also healthy, they’re bitesize and they’re delicious. Plus, they fair up a lot better in my handbag than fruits such as bananas. I can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve had crushed, mushed fruit in my bag.
5 Places Organix Snacks Come In Handy
1. The Car
The car is a place where Organix snacks get eaten a lot by Evie! We even have some snacks hidden away in our ‘Emergency Car Breakdown Kit‘. This is something we created when Evie was a baby, because one day I found myself broken down in the car, baby in tow with a long wait ahead of me.
The Emergency Car Breakdown Kit also comes in handy for times we’re caught in traffic and for when those cries of ‘I’m hungry’ come into play.
2. The Beach
We cannot head to the beach without taking snacks with us. Mostly because the beach shops are normally packed with sugary treats. It’s also a place where Evie burns a lot of energy.
Running up and down the beach all day, you can imagine how many times she cries ‘I’m hungry’.
3. The Park
The only snacks our local park shop has on offer is chocolate, cakes and ice cream! My handbag is always packed with ‘post park’ snacks so we can try our hardest to avoid these.
4. Bike Rides
Living in the countryside we go on a lot of bike rides. Usually our bike rides take us away from shops or anywhere we can pick up snacks.
We learnt the hard way to always keep snacks and water on us, especially as we never know how long our bike ride is going to be, or where it’s going to take us.
5. On Picnics
No picnic is complete without some Organix snacks. We go on a lot of picnics and we always home make lots of dishes and then fill up the bags with some additional sharing snacks, like ‘Organix Cheesy Pea Snaps’ or the ‘Cheese and Onion Lentil Hoops’.
Other Places Taking Healthy Snacks Comes In Handy
Organix have also put together a really great infographic that shares some other places you can enjoy their snacks on the go!
We’ve definitely taken their snacks with us on many a staycation. They really come in handy when we go to self-catering holiday homes or when we’re camping, as they last longer than fresh snacks. We also always take Organix snacks with us in our inflight bag when we go on holiday. You can check out our video all about our kids travel bag essentials here.
The New Organix Goodies Range
Organix have a new range of snacks out. There are some very interesting flavours aboard this range! You might have seen them on the shelves at your local supermarket already. The new snacks include ‘Fruit & Seed Bites’ which come in three flavours; banana and cocoa, coconut and cocoa and just plain old cocoa.
There are also ‘Cheese & Onion Lentil Hoops’ and one I have to admit I went ‘yuck’ at before I even tried it; the new Goodies ‘Cheesy Pea Snaps’.
One of my favourite things about Organix, is that they’re not afraid to play around with flavours. This is great for getting kids to try out new tastes and textures. If you have a toddler who is anti-vegetables, you might think that they’ll sneer their nose up at the new ‘Pea’ flavoured puffs .
I have to admit, even I thought that was a bold choice. But, miss ‘I might not eat anything green on my plate because I’m at that awful age’ wolfed down a pack of pea puffs quicker than she would actual peas! She loves them! I have to say I quite enjoyed them too and I am not a pea fan.
The Cheese and Onion Lentil Hoops also got a thumbs up from Evie, but her favourite of all were the Banana and Cocoa Fruit Bites. Definitely keep your eyes peeled for all of these on your next venture to the supermarket.
Healthy Eating Recipes
If you’re trying to stay healthy this summer and you’re stuck for ideas, did you know that the Organix website is also packed full of healthy recipes to try at home? Even better is that these recipes have been kid tested!
We’ve been eyeing up some of their fun ‘rainbow’ ideas. In the next couple of weeks we will be trying out a ‘rainbow picnic’ using some of their recipes. Especially the rainbow wraps, rainbow fruit kebabs and rainbow sandwiches.
They have a whole range of recipe options on their website, such as healthy snacks, sweet treats and foods targeted at specific meal times such as breakfast, lunch and dinner. They all look so delicious too! You can find the recipes by following this link here: Organix Recipes.
Once again, Organix get the thumbs up from us! Thank you Organix for constantly providing this toddler tummy with healthy, delicious snacks.
Also a huge thank you from me for making yet another busy parents life easier and from saving my handbag from more squished fruit dramas!
