Have you ever wanted those perfect fairytale photographs with you and your little ones? Saying that, do you have any photographs at all with you and your kids?
Flipping through old phone and camera pictures, makes you realise just how little pictures there are of all of you together.
I have the minimal amount of photographs of Evie and I, and have been eager to get some family photos for such a long time.
But, I’m going to put my hand up and say I do not do well in front of cameras. I’m typically the one at the table, shying away at family events when its picture time.
Naturally as a blogger, I find myself more comfortable behind the camera; choosing locations, lining up shots and getting others to pose for me. But, I really didn’t want to get to the point where one day, Evie would wonder why I’m never in the photos.
So a plan was made to find a photographer and the timing worked out just perfect!
Jack Westhead is a professional family photographer and luckily for me, he just moved down to Cornwall. When we were offered the chance to have a photoshoot with him for Life Unexpected, we jumped at it.
Jack predominantly specialises in weddings, but he also has an incredible eye for travel photography and has even worked with some big designer brands on fashion and product shoots.
Have a quick peek at his portfolio. He certainly has an eye for capturing good light and has the superb ability to make anything and anyone look stunning.
At this moment he is veering into family photography and with the result of our shoot, all I can say is WOW.
I’m going to let the photos speak for themselves.
What To Expect From A Shoot
A couple of weeks before our shoot, Jack asked me to set up a little Pinterest board with family photo ideas so he could get an idea of what we were looking for.
Then on the day of the shoot, we met at our location and grabbed a coffee, to exchange with each other what we wanted from the session and so that we could all feel a bit more comfortable and relaxed.
It’s not easy having your photo taken in the first place, let alone by a stranger.
Jack was really good with Evie, who was a bit grumpy and confused at first because she’d just woken up. He is a complete natural with children and was really patient, which is what you really need from a family photographer.
He even allowed her to have a look at his camera and take a couple of photos, which she was delighted with.
When we started shooting, we found a good quiet spot on the beach and Jack gave us a few directions to follow. The first ten minutes were about getting a feel for being in front of the camera and understanding what we needed to do.
It took a while for me to get used to the idea of someone being there snapping away (I am very self-concious), but Jack was really reassuring and just followed us, capturing moments as Evie and I played naturally on the beach.
Unfortunately the weather was not on our side and despite our summer clothing, there were some moments when it did feel like Winter (in September!) and we all got a bit too cold. You really can’t tell this from the photos.
Jack was really courteous though and let us stop to get Evie warm and although I’d planned for our photos to be mostly by the sea, Jack was happy for us to divert the shoot to the sand dunes, where there was less wind and a bit more in the sun.
Evie really enjoyed herself the whole time and loved showing the camera feathers and posing at will.
Overall it was a really enjoyable experience. Despite being out in public (on a busy beach although you wouldn’t think it from the photos) we felt really relaxed in our environment.
We got to be creative with the shots and Jack captured us both freely moving about and a few times with direction.
We even managed to get a couple of photos of self-conscious me! Who would have thought it?
After the shoot Jack kept us informed on the process of our photos, and after we received the final copies, he let us know that we could have any of them re-edited if we needed them to be or if we weren’t happy. As you can tell, we love them all!
