INTERVIEW WITH A MUM IN BUSINESS FEATURING: MUBAKID
If you haven’t heard of mubakid before, you are going to want to head straight over and have a browse of their website! Especially if you have a baby or toddler. The products they stock are so beautiful and even better, they all come from the best independent kids brands, who believe in creating unique, high quality products for parents and kids.
mubakid was created by two Mums who bonded over coffee and sleepless nights in those early newborn baby days. They were both really fed up with generic high street brands offering the same baby and kids products. Wanting something different for their own kids, they found themselves losing so many hours falling down the ‘Instagram’ rabbit hole on the search for unique products. After speaking to other parents, they found out they weren’t the only ones doing this, so they came up with a solution; mubakid, a place where you could go and find these beautiful, unique brands all in one place.
Before I give too much away though, I’m going to hand you over to Cata and Julia who are going to share with you more about their business, how the idea for Mubakid came about and how they’re running it together, alongside raising two small babies.
Tell us a bit about your business? Why and when did you start it?
We are mubakid – the first online marketplace dedicated to all things kid related. We showcase the best independents and at the same time offer a hassle-free shopping experience. We started out this project at the beginning of the year, in the hazy fog of newborn days. We were exhausted and bonded over our love of caffeine, the smell of newborn babies and our search for independent baby brands. Over countless coffees, our plan began to grow and we finally took the leap to champion independent baby brands here in the UK.
We set out with a simple aim of making it easier to discover something a little different that much easier. It’s been nearly two months since we launched and slowly but surely we are making the dream a reality.
How did you get the idea for your business?
Fed up with generic high street brands and after losing many hours scouring Instagram for baby products, we knew something was missing. Why was it so hard to find quality, affordable independent children’s brands? Friends, family and parents alike were struggling to find thoughtful presents too. We decided to take action.
Where do you like to work from?
We mostly work from home. That might be working together at one of our houses or working remotely. We generally prefer to meet up as the babies love being with each other – they are the best of friends! We also use co-working spaces around London which have a Crèche attached. More and more are popping up and they’re a really great solution to adhoc childcare. We are also extremely lucky to have a huge support network around us. A super supportive family on our doorstep, which we can lean on when we need to do a couple of hours solid work hours, has been a saviour.
How do you balance both work and family life?
The million dollar question and we wish we had the answer! Setting up a business and looking after two young babies is tough. What we try and do is squeeze in as much work as possible around the babies schedule which sometimes means late nights and working through nap times. Saying that like most I’m sure we don’t have much work life balance right now – we are just winging it!
What is your vision/dream for your business?
Very simply we want to be the go to place to browse and shop from small independent brands that have beautifully unique products.
What have been your biggest challenges so far and how did you overcome them?
The biggest challenge by far has to been to get the business off the ground. The idea is one thing, but to deliver it is very much another thing. It’s tough and requires tenacity and resilience. What makes us push on is a total belief in our idea and what we are trying to achieve. This has helped us pull through on the occasions we have doubted ourselves.
What has been the highlight of running your own business?
The highlight to date has to be seeing our website go live back in October. It has been an absolute labour of love and we couldn’t be prouder of the final product. We have so many beautiful products and are so lucky to be able to work with some really great independent brands – who like us are also juggling kids and running a business. The very lovely comments we received from people on social media about loving the website are also up their with our top moments!
How did you fund your business?
At the moment we are totally self-funded however we are looking into various different ways of raising money in the near future.
What advice would you give to other mums starting a business?
Stay strong. We’ve actually post a blog on the lessons we have learnt so far to help others on their journey. See here https://mubakid.com/blogs/news/hello-from-mubakid.
What does a typical working day look like for you?
A typical day starts with a cup of coffee and getting the kids ready. At the first nap of the day we sit down, open up the computer and start texting each if we are not together. We divide and conquer, assigning each person the tasks that need to be achieved that day. We use Trello which is a really useful tool for organising very long ‘to do’ lists like ours! The morning pow wow sessions will dictate the day’s activities and we’ll catch up later on to check in with each other. Most of our time is spent on social media, managing our new partners and finding new ways to improve to ensure we stay ahead of the game!
Do you have any tips to banish the mum guilt we all feel?
Our top tip would be to try and do one activity a day for the kids. It keeps everyone (including the babies!) sane. We are lucky that the babies are usually happy to play with each other but they also love soft play, trips to the park and sing along classes.
Do you ever get the chance to have time off for yourself? If so, what do you like to do?
As a business owner work is never far from your thoughts. It’s hard to switch off and we are known to text late at night when we’ve had a brainwave or a new idea! But we know its very important to switch off as well so the weekends are for family time and we try to put the phone and laptop away on a Saturday and Sunday. We love weekends out of London – the Cotswolds in particular. The villages are beautiful and the pubs are amazing!
How gorgeous are some of the brands that Cata and Julia stock? I want everything you see in all the photos above. Thank you so much Cata and Julia for this really lovely insight into your amazing, new business. I’m so excited to get to watch you grow even more in the next year.
Cata and Julia are also kindly giving away an aqua design Japanese baby grow to a lucky winner. How beautiful is this baby grow? To enter, simply fill in the rafflecopter below.
HOW BEAUTIFUL IS THE MUBAKID STORE ?
I want so many of their products for my baby to be (who will literally be here in a few weeks now – scary!). I am also so jealous that Cata and Julia live in a place where they have offices attached to creches. I really think that Cornwall needs to follow suit and do the same soon. It’s so hard trying to juggle business and babies and an attached creche honestly sounds like such a useful feature for offices to have. I absorbed so many tips from this interview – especially stay strong and to try and do at least one activity for the kids everyday! Thank you so much Cata and Julia!
