Oh no I’ve hit a wall and my motivation is failing! In my last couple of #LittleLoves posts I’ve shared with you my unfaltering enthusiasm for this year and how motivated and productive I’ve been feeling.
It’s day 19 and I’ve officially crashed. I’m so tired and my productivity has completely gone down the toilet. I seem to be really struggling to write anything this week, or photograph anything well! I had a couple of posts go live on Monday but every time I stare at the screen my brain just seems to go foggy and I can’t get very far.
I’m planning on taking the whole weekend off. My fiancee is encouraging me to take a little break, so I’m planning on taking the whole weekend off to throw myself into a lot more exercise, home renovations, reading and family time. I’m hoping time away will bring my focus back come Monday. Fingers crossed!
Next week is going to be a very busy week. I’m planning lots of giveaways in the next fortnight for both Valentines day and also my 3 year Nlogiversary, so keep your eyes peeled for some gorgeous goodies!
Now enough of the blabber, onto my favourite post of the week…Little Loves!
NIGHT CIRCUS, SELF-CARE AND A CAMERA SHY BLOGGER #LittleLoves
This week has been all about getting lost in a book, making toys and working on looking after myself a little bit better.
Night Circus – I am still reading the ‘Night Circus‘ and I’m just over halfway through. This book is so unique and reminds me a lot of Neil Gaiman with its big structure, but magical and enticing story line. I really struggled to describe this book in my post last week. It has so many layers to it and different timelines to follow, but it completely sucks you into its universe and is so incredibly written. I’ll try my best to describe it to you this week.
The Night Circus is a book that follows a magical circus. The circus appears in different cities and towns with no warning or schedule. It is so world famous its patrons are always excited when it comes to town and over the years it has gathered a cult following. Inside the circus you see extraordinary things and meet miraculous people. But there is something bigger happening behind the scenes of the circus. A fierce duel is underway between the two main characters; young magicians, Celia and Marco. They have both been trained since childhood expressly for the purpose of duelling each other. The duel has been designed to test each others skills to the max and throughout the book they play a chess like game with each other, using their magical skills and showcasing their talents. The circus is their stage, but it has also been so controlled by magic that non of its members ever get sick and they age slowly. The cracks start to show and after an audience member is killed, the illusions surrounding the circus starts to break.
At the moment I can’t predict the outcome of the book. But I know that the competition must have a winner. I’m so interested to see how this pans out and if the Circus is going to end up breaking down completely or it’ll remain a mysterious, wonderful thing that travels on.
Riverdale – It’s back! I absolutely adore Riverdale. It’s my replacement Pretty Little Liars and I have to admit I’m a huge sucker for a teen drama with a hint of mystery. If you’ve not watched Riverdale before, it’s based on the famous ‘Archie Comics’.
It follows Archie and his group of teenage friends who live in a typical American little down called Riverdale. The show starts off with a mysterious death of a teenager and as the show goes on it gets darker and more enchanting as these normal everyday teenagers battle with things, like serial killers and gangsters, all while trying to complete high school.
Bright – We also tried out Bright this week. It’s the new ‘Netflix’ original film with Will Smith. I have to say, it was brilliant, but it was also lacking in some way. I think if Will Smith wasn’t the main actor it wouldn’t have kept my attention.
Not Another Mummy Blogs Podcast – I’ve started listening to podcasts when I’m getting ready in the morning and I’m slowly falling in love with them. I don’t know why I’ve not really thought to listen to podcasts before because they’re so easy to have on in the background.
One of my favourite podcasts is run by Alison from ‘Not Another Mummy Blog’. I love her blog anyway, but her podcasts are on a whole other level of brilliant. Every week she interviews a mum on a different topic. Topics can be anything from family travel to mum guilt. This week I listened to Alisons interview with Mum and ‘Hello Magazine’ editor in chief Rosie Nixon. This podcast really resonated with me and is so helpful for any mum who needs to take better care of themselves but finds they’re always too busy with work.
You can listen to it here: Rosie Nixon On The Importance Of Self-Care
It was SO refreshing to hear how someone else, who is totally busy building a career and having a family, finds the time to care for them self. One point she made, that I loved, is that we have three main areas of our life; our work, our family and our friends. She said that balancing friends and the social side tends to get the hit the most and this is something I found so true and am so guilty of doing. I also loved that she doesn’t see self-care as just exercising and healthy eating, but she addressed some other important areas we need to focus on too. I won’t give too much away, but do go and give it a listen!
A WindyBun – Yes, you read it right, we made a WindyBun. A WindyBun is Evie’s dream pet. We had a really fun challenge by a brand this week, to draw Evie’s dream pet on a piece of paper and send it off to them. They then got to work and made us a soft toy replica of our drawing. It was such a lovely experience.
We couldn’t believe how accurate it was when it arrived in the post. Seeing Evie’s face when she saw her drawing come to life was incredible. You can pop over to the post to see what the drawing looked like here ‘Creating Our Dream Pet‘, and to compare it with the finished product. Evie was head designer and wanted an animal that was a cross between an owl, a bunny and a reindeer. It’s definitely the weirdest and most wonderful animal I’ve ever seen.
Lace, chenille, faux fur and suede – I started a new series on Life Unexpected a couple of weeks ago called ‘What Mama Wore’. It’s my attempt at finding my style and also appearing in front of the camera a bit more.
The series was supposed to be weekly, but I really struggled to post my second one this week. I am so camera shy it isn’t even funny. I get really anxious before a camera is pointed in my direction and I just don’t know how to stand or how to hold my face. It’s so ironic that I’m a blogger, yet I can’t have my own picture taken. I haven’t had much body confidence my whole life. I was bullied at school because I grew into my adult body before my friends did, and my hangups seem to have stayed with me.
After much persuasion by my fiancee and best friend, I did try again with the series. I am hoping the ‘What Mama Wore’ series will bring me out of my shell and hopefully will also help with my confidence over the next year. Fingers crossed.

10 Chores For A Three Year Old – I recently found out that one of my most popular posts on Life Unexpected (of all time) is a post I wrote two years ago called ‘Chores For A One Year Old‘. Apparently everyone wants their kids to start chores young! Recently I decided to publish an updated version sharing some of the chores our three year old does. I think pre-school age is the perfect age for little ones to start helping around the house more.
Evie absolutely adores helping. It’s good for developing motor skills, teaching them to be helpful and also giving them responsibility. Even though they can sometimes be a hindrance and slow you down, I think it’s so good to start them off helping young. I have one very lazy teenage sister who still gets cleaned up after, so I’m on a mission to make sure Evie doesn’t become like that. You can read what chores Evie does in ‘10 Chores For A Three Year Old‘.
