We have just tried out the Pretend & Play® Calculator Cash Register by Learning Resources. If you have a three to seven year old, they are going to love this!

Does anyone else have a child who is really enthusiastic about helping out with your food shopping? Any time we go to the shops we always try and go to the self-service checkouts because Evie really wants to be involved. She loves helping to find the barcodes, scan the items and press the pay buttons.

When it comes to paying the money though, she still doesn’t quite know what all the coins and notes are. Recently I’ve been looking for fun ways to teach her about money and the values of each coin and the Learning Resources ‘Pretend & Play® Calculator Cash Register’ has been so perfect for doing this.

Pretend & Play® Calculator Cash Register

One thing I really, really love about this cash register is that the money has been created to mimic ours exactly. This makes it so much easier to teach Evie about our coins, but through play. That’s not the only reason we love it though. It has so many fun features that your kids will really enjoy discovering and at the same time it will teach them so many new skills, as well as reinforcing old learning. I love toys that do this!

The cash register retails at £36 and comes with 44 play money pieces. We choose the register with UK currency and it includes £50, £20, £10 and £5 notes (which look really realistic). It also comes with £2, £1, 50p, 20p, 10p, 5p, 2p and 1p coins. The cash register does have other currency options too, check out the website to see if they stock your currency.

I really like that the cash register has large buttons. It’s perfect if you have younger kids wanting to play with it too and for us, this means that Evie can use it to play with her younger cousins anytime they come over. The cash register also comes with a pretend credit card, a notepad and a working solar powered calculator. Evie’s favourite part? It makes a ‘cha-ching’ sound when you use it.

How To Play

There are so many ways your kids can play with this cash register. So far we’ve been using it for:

  • Role Play – We set up a little shop, pull out the play food and trolley and take turns being the shop keeping.
  • Learning about different coin values – We’ve been sitting down with Evie a lot and talking to her about the different coin values. We’ve also been getting her to trace and drawer each coin to further her recognition of them.
  • Maths – Evie’s been using the coins to do basic maths. Very soon we’re going to move on from basic counting and show her how to make ‘other coin values’ using the smaller coins. E.g. how many 50ps make £1.
  • Learning to use a calculator – Although this is still a little bit tricky for Evie, she’s been really enjoying inputting the value of things onto the till and either pressing the + or – button to see what they make.

Our Thoughts

Evie really loves the Pretend & Play® Calculator Cash Register. Her favourite way to play with it is through role playing shops but she is also enjoying exploring the calculator. The cash register has already really helped her so much, especially when it comes to recognising monetary values. This week when we were at the real shops, she could easily pick out the £1 coins and 50ps and was so proud to get to pay for some things by herself.

For younger kids, this is the perfect toy to help develop social skills and for role play. It’s so engaging! For older kids, it’s amazing for helping them to learn about calculations, to help them to develop basic maths skills and to teach them to recognise different coin values.

I love that this toy is not just something thats going to be played with once. It can be used in so many different ways and I know its going to last us for years and years.

This looks fantastic. All three of ours have loved their tills and set up shops for each other and us now too. It has also helped them learn about money, and then when we moved to Sweden it helped them get a grip of the new currency

We have a cash register just like this one, and it’s funny hearing the kids play ‘shop’. They’d sell anything – their own duvet cover! All a learning experience 🙂

This has been so thoughtfully made. Whoever designed it clearly knows a lot about children. It’s so important to them that make believe play is as realistic as possible, so it’s great that it’s an actual calculator, with realistic money and a good noise!
