The newest Orchard Toys game, Sound Detectives, has landed and this week we got to test it out. Sound Detectives is not only the latest game in the Orchard Toys range, but it’s also the first one to be integrated with an app! If you have a child who is 3-6 years old, they are going to love this game.
We also have one of these games to giveaway to one lucky reader. Read on to find out how you can enter.
If you are a regular reader of Life Unexpected or if you follow us on Instagram stories, you’ll know just how obsessed we are as a family, with Orchard Toys!
Every single day, without fail, when Evie comes home from school, we have to play at least one Orchard Toys game. We have an entire large drawer full (soon to be cupboard) and our collection is by no means complete.
I honestly think that every family should have at least one game by Orchard Toys. They are not only fun, but they’re educational too and the whole family can enjoy playing with them them.
It’s safe to say that Evie was extremely excited to unbox a new Orchard Toys game and I have a feeling we are going to be playing this a lot in the coming months, because she loves it!
Sound Detectives is suitable for ages 3+ and can be played by up to four people.
Before starting your first game you need to download the Orchard Toys App and have it ready on your phone. The app is very easy to use and your kids can navigate it completely by themselves. So far Sound Detectives is the only game on the Orchard Toys app, but I don’t doubt that in future more of their games will be integrated with technology.
Inside the box you’ll find four game boards, four characters, and a bunch of double sided clue cards. On one side of the cards there are footprints and on the other, pictures of different clues.
The aim of the game is try and catch the robbers. You do this by listening to sound clues, matching them to the pictures and building your detectives path, so that you can take steps closer to catching the cheeky thief.
How To Play
To play the game you need to first open up the app, set up your game boards, choose your characters and lay out the clue cards picture side up.
Players can then take it in turn to ‘play a sound’ on the app. The quickest person to find the matching picture on the clue cards gets to keep it.
They then need to turn it over so that its now footprint side up. Then, it gets added to the path on their game board and they can move their character along a space.
The first one to get to the other side of their board is the winner and they can turn over their ‘robber’ picture on the puzzle board and put them in jail.
We have a lot of Orchard Toy games and out of all of them this is probably the most simple one to play. But, that’s not a negative thing. This particular game helps kids to develop and reinforce their ‘listening skills’, ‘matching and memory skills’, ‘hand-eye co-ordination’ and ‘social skills’.
This game has been amazing for helping with Evie’s hand-eye co-ordination. She is very clumsy and not very body aware. Although she can recognise the sounds very quickly, she isn’t the fastest at being able to move her hands and see and grab the clues.
Playing this game again and again has really helped her to focus on developing her hand-eye co-ordination. We’ve also found a way to make this game even more fast paced and challenging.
Instead of having the clues picture side up, we’ve been playing them picture side down. This means every time a sound plays, we’ve either got to remember where we’ve seen the clue before, or we have to race each other to turn the cards over and find the correct sound.
Overall we really, really love this game and we love the fact that it also comes with an app. It adds a whole new dimension to Orchard Toys games and we can’t wait to see what else they come up with in the future.
Sound Detectives retails at £10.25 and you can buy it here:
