So, what do you get a blogger for Christmas?
If you are a blogger looking to add to your Christmas wish list, or if you know a blogger and have no idea what to get for him/her, then you have come to the right place. (p.s. friends and family, you are more than welcome to read this to get ideas! ;D )
Just like any other blogger, I’m constantly on the lookout for new equipment, props and ideas to make my blog and my blog posts stand out from the crowd. I’ve asked a handful of professional bloggers for their suggestions, I’ve scrawled the internet reading what the best bloggers use and I’ve worked very hard to pull together this ‘Ultimate Bloggers Christmas Gift Guide’. You won’t find anything on this list that isn’t loved or needed by others.
This ‘Bloggers Christmas Gift Guide‘ is made up of a huge mixture of high value, much wanted and ‘I didn’t even know I needed that’ ideas. I promise you, that you are sure to find something to add to your bloggers ‘Christmas’ wish list, or you’ll be sure to find something to buy for your blogger loved one. I’ve broken it down into sections, e.g. Cameras, tripods, planners, photo props…to make it easier to find what you are looking for. If you don’t find anything, you can comment below telling me off. But I have a feeling you will, regardless of your budget. Now lets start with the biggies;
There are several cameras that are considered to be ‘the bees knees’ in the blogging industry. I’ve included a few of those cameras in this ‘Bloggers Christmas Gift Guide‘. If you are planning on ‘upgrading’ your camera, investing in a vlogging camera, or moving up from using a phone and buying your first ever professional camera, then this section is for you.
Now, the first one on the list is a camera that you may have heard a lot about lately. It’s the:
Canon G7X Mark 2 –
This camera has been recommended to me by pretty much 100+ bloggers. It’s popularity is insane and it’s so understandable why. I ended up buying the G7X Mark ii myself last year and it was the best blogging investment I’ve ever made. It’s hailed as one of the best ‘vlogging’ cameras, but I personally use it for anything and everything. Its so small it fits in my handbag, unlike its bulkier DSLR brothers and sisters. The way it picks up light means its great for indoor shoots, even in winter (wahoo!) and its compact enough to be the perfect ‘travel companion’. Great if you want to take pictures on your holidays, but don’t fancy lugging around your DSLR. The quality of it is A-M-A-ZING. I’ll link you to one of my holiday posts last year so you can see for yourself: 10 Days In Palma De Mallorca.
- You can buy this camera here: Canon G7X Mark ii
Up next is the famous…
Olympus Pen –
This is every lifestyle bloggers ‘dream’ camera. Not only does the Olympus Pen look beautiful, but it takes incredible shots too. It’s available in several gorgeous colours and is THE camera you want to upgrade to. If you bought this for the blogger in your life, I have a feeling they’ll never let you go!
- You can buy this camera here: Olympus Pen E-PL8
But what if you’re just a beginner? Well this next camera, is for you…
Canon 1300D DSLR –
If you’re thinking of investing in a ‘first’ camera for your blog, I really recommend starting out with the Canon 1300D. This camera is so easy to use and it’s such good value. It takes high quality, gorgeous pictures, but it’s really not expensive at all. I have this camera and if you check out my post ‘A Giant Adventure With Land Rover Discovery‘, you’ll see how great the photos are. 50% of the photos in that post are taken on this camera and the other 50% on the Canon G7X Mark ii. I challenge you to try and spot the difference. The pre-sets on the Canon 1300D are great for newbies. But, the manual mode gives you the option to practise changing the settings around, so that you can learn how to use DSLR at your own pace.
- You can buy this camera here: Canon EOS 1300D
Tripods & Selfie Sticks
Every blogger I spoke to about this ‘Christmas Gift Guide’ told me that they were looking for, or that I should add tripods. I finally got a ‘proper’ tripod myself last Christmas, and it was one of the best things I did. Before I invested in a tripod I found myself propping up my camera on books or tables and after a nearly disastrous ‘falling off and breaking’ moment, I knew it was time to invest in something a bit more stable.
Velbon VEX640 with transport bag –
I got this tripod last year for christmas. I love it because it folds down really small and comes with a transport bag. Perfect if you’re low on storage space or want to use it out and about. This particular tripod is great because it has a three way head and can be tilted up, down and on the side for different angular shots. I love using it for vlogs, flatlays and hands free tutorials.
- You can buy this tripod here: Velbon VEX640
Joby Gorilla Pod –
Alongside my tripod, I have this Joby Gorilla Pod. I know so many bloggers who LOVE this product and it’s great if you don’t want to invest in a bulkier one. I use this with both my phone and for my Canon G7X Mark ii. It can also fit Go Pros, but if you want one for a DSLR, you’ll need to get a slightly larger size.
The Joby Gorilla Pod is a bloggers best friend because of one amazing reason; it wraps around things! Seriously, you can ‘wrap’ this tripod around so many things from tree branches to benches, to posts, to chairs, to railings. If you have no one to take a picture of you, or you want a photo with someone without holding the camera at arms length, just set the timer and wrap it around something. Plus the legs can be manipulated to make it stand up on its own in a variety of ways. It’s also small enough to fit in your handbag, so you don’t need to worry about carting big equipment around.
- You can buy this tripod here: Joby GorillaPod Tripod
Selfie Stick –
I bought a selfie stick to take on holiday this year. I once swore that I’d never have one. But, I have to admit that it’s great for vlogging on the go, it saves you arm cramp trying to take selfies and you can actually get couple shots without having to ask someone to take a loved up picture of you. This one is strong enough to hold a DSLR as well as a GoPro or a compact camera.
- You can buy this selfie stick here: Arespark Professional
Most of the bloggers I spoke to, said they were asking for lenses this year for Christmas. I’ve only just started experimenting with lenses and I’ve been really enjoying the results. If you are new to photography, you don’t need to worry too much about investing in lenses yet. But, if you want to experiment with blurred backgrounds or take longer shots, then a variety of lenses is the way to go. Here I focus on Canon lenses because that’s the camera I have, but every DSLR has their own range.
Canon EF-S 18-55mm –
The Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Zoom Lens usually comes as standard with the Canon 1300D. It’s the perfect everyday lens and captures beautiful photos. The zoom quality is good, although I’d recommend getting closer to your subject than using the zoom, as it can end up being grainy.
Canon EF 50 mm f/1.8 II Lens –
This is the perfect lens for ‘close ups’. This lens is very popular with professional bloggers and vloggers. It’s great for creating a blurry background in photos or videos and for taking shots of products or portraits. If you get any lens, I highly recommend this one.
- You can buy this lens here: Canon EF 50 mm 1.8 STM Lens
There is one thing I am investing in this Christmas (I have actually bought some new ones this week! Oops!) is photo backdrops.
Have you invested in a photo backdrop yet? If you’re not sure what to buy the blogger you know, then you cannot go wrong with a backdrop. I’m adding these to the ‘Ultimate Bloggers Christmas Wish List‘ because they’d make the perfect stocking filler.
If you don’t want to buy one, you can create your own backdrops for really cheap (I made this video tutorial to show you how) or you can buy some really beautiful pre-made ones that are well worth the investment.
Capture By Lucy Photo Backdrops –
I have several backdrops by ‘Capture By Lucy’ and they are amazing for flat lays and for product shoots. Several of hers are actually featured in the images of this gift guide (including the image above). Go and have a peek at her online store to see which is your favourite…
- You can buy pre-made backdrops here: Capture By Lucy Backdrop
Don’t worry, your house doesn’t need to turn into the picture above. But, most of the bloggers I spoke to either had professional lights on their own Christmas wish lists for this year, or they recommended me to add them to this one.
I’m lucky that my vlogging camera (the Canon G7X Mark ii) picks up natural light even in the darkest of rooms. But, with the cold, gloomier days on the way, natural daylight isn’t always on our side. If you’ve ever tried to take product photos on a grey January day, you’ll know what I mean.
For Christmas this year, I’m also asking Santa for some professional lighting to help me take better quality photos and vlogs. Here’s what I’ve been recommended to get by some top vloggers…
Ring Lights –
If you are a vlogger or take lots of selfies for your blog, then a ring light might just make its way to the top of your ‘Bloggers Christmas Wish List’. I’ve asked for one of these this year, as I’ve heard that it really helps with vlogging in the evenings and on darker winter days. A ring light basically lights up your face, or whatever you need it to. The one below has been recommended to me the most:
- You can buy a ring light here: Professional Ring Light
Soft Box Studio Lights –
Soft box studio lights are AMAZING for product photos or vlogging. I’ve been meaning to get these two ‘Softbox Studio’ lights for a while now and I have asked for them for Christmas (please Santa!). Lots of bloggers have told me that they create so much light and at under £50 for two, they seem really reasonable.
- You can buy soft boxes here: Continuous Lighting Kit
Here comes the items that I’m personally ‘dreaming’ about owning this Christmas. These are the ‘toys’ that I don’t need but really want. They might be on the top of your ‘Ultimate Bloggers Christmas Wish List’ too, especially if you travel often, or want to experiment with vlogging.
I seriously want a GoPro! They are great because they are so compact, are durable, can be worn on your body, can be attached to a selfie stick and can even get wet. I really want one of these for holiday vlogs, so I can get some ‘on the move’ and ‘under water’ shots of my family. I’ve asked so many bloggers and vloggers which is the best and even though it’s not the newest, they’ve recommended the GoPro Hero4.
- You can buy a GoPro here: GoPro Hero4
Drones are so cool!If you don’t know, they can capture beautiful landscapes and scenery from above. Perfect for any holiday vlogs. I think it’ll be a new toy that will get a lot of playtime from me and my partner, but he has said ‘not this year’. January is soon right? If you are serious about travel photography and vlogging then these two are really great investments and potential things you should add to your Christmas wish list.
- You can buy a drone here: DJI Phantom 3 Standard Drone
Extra Handy Accessories
Do all of the things so far seem a little on the expensive side? Well, here comes the budget friendly ‘blogging’ must haves, to add to your Christmas wish list. Starting with the things no one really thinks about, but are actually super helpful…
Did you know you can get little microphones for your iPhone, your DSLR and your standard camera? They are great for getting better quality sound in your vlogs or your Instagram or Facebook lives. I have added one of these to my wish list because my phone camera especially, picks up all the worst sounds.
- You can buy a little microphone here: Microphone
Remote Control –
One thing I only recently bought, but can’t be without now, is a little remote control for my camera. It’s a lot easier to use a remote control instead of using the camera timer, especially if you need to capture multiple photos. Plus they’re so cheap and are well worth the investment. I have one specifically for my canon camera and I can use it for both.
- You can buy a remote control here: Canon Remote Control
So what if you already have all the equipment you need? Well how about a new blog theme for Christmas, to see you into the new year? Every year or so I love to update my theme to keep things fresh and on trend. Some of my absolute favourites, and ones that are very popular with bloggers, can be found on a website called Pipdig.
Pipdig Blog Theme –
I love how customisable these themes and and now they come with the integrated ‘shop the look’ widgets, which is helpful for those of you who feature a lot of outfit posts.
- You can have a browse of their themes here: Pipdig
I don’t know many bloggers who can keep up with everything they need to do, without using some kind of planner or schedule. There are so many out there though, and so many recommendations, it’s really hard to choose. I’m going to link you to ‘You Baby Me Mummy‘ who recommends 11+ planners, so you can have a bit more of a range to choose from. But, here are my favourite three:
Hello Time Planner –
I have this planner (you can read my full review of it here – it’s the one in the picture above) and it is A-M-A-ZING. I use it to plan my week, my editorial calendar for the month and to set and achieve goals. It has pages where you can break down different stages of your goals, it has pages where you can write down to do lists for days, it has pages where you can write down and get rid of your worries, etc etc. My favourite thing about it is that it’s undated so you can start using it whenever.
- You can buy the Hello Time Planner here: Hello Time Life Planner
Busy B Planner –
This is another planner I have personally used and again I have a review of it here. I also reviewed the ‘Busy Life‘ planner, so if you wanted a diary that fits both your home and your blog life in, you might be more suited to that one.
If you’re just focusing on blogging then the ‘To Do’ planner is for you. The best bit is the week by week section where you can write tasks to do that week, that you can’t necessarily slot into a day yet.
- You can buy the Busy B planner here: Busy B ‘To Do’ Planner
Epic Blog: One Year Editorial Planner –
This planner is on my Christmas wish list. I’ve watched a youtube about it and it was created by a top, million pound making blogger called ByRegina. She offers so many blogging tips and tricks and now she has created a planner showing you how she organises her time and goals.
- You can buy the Epic Blog Planner here : Epic Blog: One Year Editorial Planner
Books & Magazines
So, you’ve added some blogging equipment to your wish list and some planners, but what about other stocking fillers? Well, how about some books?
There are so many books about blogging, I could literally write a whole separate post about all the ones that are fab and worth a read. I did a mini post on ‘Laura Summer’s Blog‘ a little while back, so if you want more book ideas, do check that out. I have to recommend these two though:
Million Dollar Blog –
I have this book and it is amazing! It is so well written and very informative, regardless of what level of blogging you are at. It shows you a whole different variety of ways to make an income from your blog, ways you can increase readership and take your blog to the next level.
- You can buy the Million Dollar Blog book here: Million Dollar Blog
Blogging Your Way To Riches –
I’ve not got this book yet, but it’s one that is on my Christmas wish list. Blogging Your Way To Riches was written by two bloggers whose blogs I love to read. I was told to put it on this list by other bloggers and I’ve heard its a must read from so many people. Apparently this book will show you realistic and easy ways to get from hobby blogger to pro.
- You can buy the Blogging Your Way To Riches book here: Blogging Your Way To Riches
If books aren’t your thing though, how about a subscription to a blogging magazine? I’m subscribed to ‘Blogosphere’ (in the picture above) and it is really good. Every quarter a new magazine comes to your door and inside it’s packed with articles and interviews from bloggers in every niche, from parenting, to beauty, to travel. It’s a great way to pick up a few more blogging tips and to be introduced to some new bloggers.
- You can subscribe to Blogosphere here: Blogosphere Magazine
I don’t know any blogger than doesn’t want to further themselves and the best way to do that is to invest in online courses. Last year I actually got the ‘Blog Growth Accelerator‘ for Christmas and it was so lovely to start the new year doing a course that would help me grow my business.
I have tried a few courses out for myself and as long as you choose carefully, you can really benefit from them. If you’re thinking of buying one for a blogger you know, it might be worth asking them which one they’d like first. But, if you’re a blogger then I can highly recommend any by….
Aby from popular family lifestyle blog ‘You Baby Me Mummy’ started up her online courses at the end of last year and they’ve gone from strength to strength. She is the ultimate blogging guru and this year alone has helped 1000’s of people go from hobby blogger to pro. She also has loads of free courses so you can get a taster of her teaching methods.
- You can check out You Baby Me Mummy’s courses here: Online Courses
One that I have asked for this year for Christmas is ‘Moolah’. I’m a freelance social media manager and one of the platforms I mainly work on is Facebook. Every blogger will vouch for the fact that Facebook is the trickiest platform to grow. But the Moolah course teaches you how to do this affectively and everyone I know who has completed the course has suddenly grown in engagement levels and page likes by a phenomenal amount.
- You can check out the Moolah Facebook course here: Moolah
We’re coming to the end of the ‘Ultimate Bloggers Christmas Gift Guide‘ now, but it wouldn’t be complete without adding in some photo props. We all take photos of brand products and the majority of us take flat lays of some sort, at some time. Photo props are a really easy, but effective way to make your photos pop. If you don’t know what to get the blogger in your life, you cannot go wrong with one of these…
Light Box –
Light boxes were all the rage last year. You can now pick them up anywhere from New Look to Amazon. I love putting motivational quotes on mine and use it to light up my office in the evenings. They’re great for using in blog photos as props, or on Instagram.
- You can buy a light box here: Light Box
Motivational Quotes –
I love seeing Instagram photos and blog photos with quotes in them. A little photo prop like this makes a flat lay so much more. I’m going to be getting some of these for myself very soon (unless someone would like to buy me some for Christmas – ‘Hi Mum’ *waves*)
- You can buy motivational quotes here: Photo Prop Quotes
Felt Board –
Felt boards are the new craze when it comes to flat lays and Instagram posts. I personally really love them and may have bought one (ahem *two*) for myself to use this week, including the one in the photo above. Photos with text are always a lot more eye-catching and I’ve noticed whenever I’ve used the light box, that more people click through the photo, especially if its linked to a post. They come in so many pretty colours. I’ve invested in a blue one and a grey one.
- You can buy a felt board here: LetterWrites Felt board
Software is going to be the very last thing on the ‘Ultimate Bloggers Christmas Gift Guide‘. It’s an expense that some bloggers have told me they can’t quite justify but know that they need. I know at least 5 bloggers who are asking for software for Christmas (it might not sound like a glamorous present, but it’s oh so worth it). You can usually pay for them monthly at a small price, or yearly. Here are two of the most popular:
Lightroom and Photoshop –
You can actually get these too together. I have a macbook and although I love the general editing software that comes as standard on a mac, my ultimate favourite software is Lightroom. It’s £8.50 a month to use Lightroom and although its an investment, it makes editing photos so much easier and quicker. You can bulk edit in your style, or individually edit each photo. But the difference it can make is phenomenal. Another great one to have is photoshop. You can make your own blog graphics, your own gifs, an animated Facebook photo cover…the list goes on.
- You can take a peak at Adobe Creative Suite packages here: Lightroom and Photoshop
Win, Win, Win!
I’ve heard from so many people in the past few weeks, that they’ve asked Santa for a tripod for Christmas. So I thought I’d get my festive hat on and take a leaf out of the big red coated mans book and give one away ‘just because’. So…if you fancy winning a Joby Gorilla Pod, feel free to enter below! The winner will be announced on the 14th December and I’ll try and get it posted out before the big day. Merry Christmas you lovely blogging lot!
Phew…so that’s it. The ‘Ultimate Bloggers Christmas Gift Guide’. Did I leave anything out at all? I really hope not!
So did you find anything on the ‘Ultimate Bloggers Christmas Gift Guide’ that you love? Is there anything here on your wish list, or is there anything you think I should add? Let me know all your thoughts below!
Also, if any of my friends and family want to buy me anything from this list that I don’t already have, you’re more than welcome.
