Welcome to ‘What Mama Wore’, a new weekly feature on Life Unexpected.
Now, there are two things you should know about me before I start this post.
- I am really not very confident and I’m super self-conscious. (oh the irony, being a blogger!)
- I always tend to stay in my ‘comfort zone’ when it comes to clothes.
Now, I don’t know if its because it’s a New Year, or maybe because I’m nearly 30, but this year I really want to start pushing myself out of my comfort zone and I also really want to try and stop caring so much about what people think.
I am so hard on myself and even now, I’m incredibly anxious about starting this series. But, I do really want to be more confident. I’d love to be more accepting of my body. I want to experiment more with my style (I am such a plain Jane) and I really want to start challenging myself to actually appear in front of the camera more instead of shying away from it, or instead of always trying to be the one taking the pictures.
What Mama Wore #1
What Mama Wore is not only going to be my style diary, to see if I can evolve from plain Jane to flamboyant peacock, but it’s also going to give me a huge nudge towards growing my confidence and being a bit more ‘face on’ on Life Unexpected.
For the last four years, Life Unexpected has predominantly been about Evie. I’ve watched her grow up through this blog, but in September this year, she’s officially going to start school. I’ve noticed how much our life has shifted in the last year and it’s time for this blog to follow suit.
When this blog started, it was all about my little ‘Life Unexpected’ and as a new mum who was so baby obsessed, it predominantly featured 100’s of pictures of her. But, we’re no longer wrapped up in the baby days and in the last year, I’ve really felt like I’ve now found the perfect balance between being a mum to Evie, a self-employed writer, a fiancee and me! I want to share a lot more of those other elements on this blog starting with my scariest post to date, one that’s all about me!
Now, enough of the blabber. Let’s get down to the clothes.
Outfit Of The Week
So, this week I’ve been trying to experiment with wearing lighter and brighter clothes. In winter I tend to wear black jeans, a darkish top or t-shirt, black jackets, black boots…you get the theme? I’ve really tried to push myself lately and have invested in some gorgeous light jeans, some actual colours (hello pink), oh and some new lighter boots too. Here’s some of the things I am currently obsessed with:
Don’t you just love it when you find a pair of jeans that not only fits perfectly, but they really flatter you too? I have searched high and low for years for the perfect jeans and as soon as I tried on the Joni jeans from Topshop, I knew I would never find another pair that suits me quite like they do. I have always struggled with jeans. They either hug in the wrong places or always fall down. Joni jeans are my go to jeans and I absolutely love that they do them in a whole range of colours and styles. I also have these in black and dark wash too and in the past I’ve had the ripped knee Joni jeans and lighter summery colours too. These jeans go with absolutely everything and I also love that they can be dressed up or down!

This pink jumper is super, super soft!!! I found it when we were in Venice, but in H&M of all places. I never normally wear pink, in fact i think this was the first pink thing I’ve owned in years. I’ve since gone on a bit of a pink spree and have recently discovered that it’s a colour that actually really suits my pale complexion and compliments my dark hair. I’m definitely going to be investing in a lot more pink this year. If you’re looking for a super soft knit, that’s bright enough to lighten you up on these dull, winter days, then this is for you! I love this top teamed with a suede skirt or tucked into a pair of jeans. I’m normally a small, but I bought mine in medium so it was slightly oversized and so I can sometimes wear it off the shoulder too.

Pier One Ankle Boots
My boots are ‘Pier One’ and I got them this week from Zalando, in the sale! I’ve been searching everywhere for ankle boots with no luck. The styles that I’ve seen on the high street recently, really don’t suit me. They’re way to masculine shaped for me. My feet are quite big and even though I love the square styles, I need feminine round looking boots to flatter my legs and to hide my huge feet. These boots are half price in the sale at the moment and are such a gorgeous fit. They have really pretty tassles on the side of them and the suede finish is really lovely. They also come in both a light beige colour and red as well.

I recently went to the opticians because I have a frown line that just keeps getting bigger and bigger. Although my eye sight is by no means bad, they recommended I get a pair of glasses to wear when I’m working, because the glare of the screen is making me squint more than I should be and my eyes are getting lazy. I picked up a cute little pair from Boots and they’ve been helping so much. I only wear them when I’m using my laptop for work, but I absolutely adore the design and my face feels so much more relaxed.

I really love the casual look of jeans, a jumper and ankle boots. But I do tend to always wear darker colours. I wanted to step into the New Year feeling a lot brighter and I think on those dull, drizzly days, wearing a pop of pink and changing to a lighter coloured pair of jeans, actually does wonders for your mood.
I’ll never give up my black jeans and darker tops and jumpers, but I definitely will be playing around with lighter colours, bolder patterns and more vibrants pieces as the months go on.
I hope you’ll join me on my style journey!!!
