Welcome to ‘What Mama Wore’, a new weekly feature on Life Unexpected where I share with you my style journey and also my mission to become more confident in front of the camera.
What Mama Wore #2 – Outfit Of The Week
Wow, confidence is a funny thing isn’t it? I’m trying really hard to love my body and to not be so anxious in front of a camera, but I really did struggle this week. I almost didn’t do this post at all. But, after much convincing from a few lovely people on Instagram, plus a good amount of persuasion from my best friend, I decided I need to stick with it and carry on giving it a go.
Last week I shared with you why I’ve started this style serious and how I’m hoping it’ll bring my out of my shell. I am seriously lacking in confidence, but the older I get, the more I want to learn to love my body and accept myself for who I am. I’m also on a mission to find ‘my style’ and to see if I can evolve from a plain Jane who hides behind clothes, into a flamboyant peacock who loves the clothes she is in.
Now, enough of the blabber. Let’s get down to the outfit…
Last week I shared with you a few beautiful pops of pink (you can read all about that here), but this week I’ve stepped back into some classic black. My favourite outfit from this week was one that was centred around some super soft clothes. These include a suede and fur jacket, a velvet lace top, a chenille cardigan and some suede shoes!
Black Lace Velvet Cami
My black velvet lace top is one of my favourite items in my wardrobe. I bought it from a shop called ‘Easy Clothes’ back in December. I stumbled across Easy Clothes on Instagram and it has hands down become my favourite online store. The company is based in Belgium, but shipping is really quick and the prices of the clothes are so cheap. They do some really gorgeous lace style knitwear and jumpers, as well as gorgeous lace tops and jackets.
This top was only £16! I also bought a white cotton version and a black cotton version too which you can see in my #LittleLoves post here. They also regularly re-stock popular styles, which is amazing, so if a product says out of stock, it’s highly likely it will come back soon. I have my eye on a pink suede jacket and a few of their lace jumpers next.

Grey Chenille Cardigan
Because it’s so cold out, I’ve been teaming all my lace tops with a grey chenille cardigan. This one I found in New Look. It is so soft! I really love the slightly puffy sleeves, which are completely in style at the moment. I chose the grey colour because it goes with a lot more of my clothes, but they did have other, bolder colours too.

When I’ve been going out, I’ve been wearing my lace top with my aviator jacket. I am going to start trying to avoid wearing so much black (I am terrible for wearing all black). But I do really love this as an outfit combination. My aviator jacket is from Topshop and it’s currently in the sale so go, go, go if you love it! I wouldn’t normally get something like this, but I kept seeing it in the shop and really wanted to try something I wouldn’t normally wear.
I quickly fell in love with it because of how cosy it is. Inside its lined with faux fur and it is really snug. I also have a faux fur coat and thick winter coat in my wardrobe, but this coat zipped up, completely trumps all of them when its icy cold. It really seems to retain heat and I love that it looks really stylish with both my joni jeans and my favourite everyday dresses.

I posted about Joni jeans in my last post (don’t worry, I won’t just be wearing jeans all the time), but I do love how these high waisted ones sit and how they go so well with everything. I have these jeans in black and a darker wash blue too. They go with any tops and I love that they can be dressed up or down really easily.

My favourite thing about this outfit is the lace top. I’ve never been a huge fan of my arms, so I’ve always avoided strap tops. Part of trying to grow my confidence means I need to step out of my comfort zone a little bit more.
I am so glad I gave in and bought these. The lace detailing is so gorgeous and adds such a feminine, but elegant touch to my outfits. I also love that these tops can easily be worn on a fancy night out, or made really casual with a pair of jeans.
Next week I promise to post an outfit without jeans and hopefully as the weeks go on, my confidence will grow and these posts will flow more easily.
